Effect of Preharvest Foliar Application of Maleic Hydrazide on Sprout Inhibition and Storage Quality of Potato , Solanum tuberosum L. cv. ´ Dejima ´ Tubers

Abstract

|
Studies were made to elucidate the effect of malefic hydrazide(MH) on sprout inhibition and storage life of fall cropping potato, Solaxum tuberosum L. cv. `Dejima´. The change of sugar content and invertase activity of stored potato tubers were followed during the storage period.
Total or marketable-sized number of potato tubers and yield was not influenced by application the and concentrations of MH. Decrease in height of tubers during storage was markedly inhibited by all concentrations of MH ranging from 1, 000 to 3,000ppm. After 4 months of storage, MH treated potato tubers showed only 4?o decrease in weight regardless of the concentrations whereas nontreated potato tubers showed 14% decrease.
No difference was found in the moisture content of treated or untreated potato tubers. In general, total soluble sugar content and invertase activity showed decreasing pattern with storage period.
